What is ADHD and should I assess my child?

If you’re wondering whether your young child might have ADHD, you’re not alone. Many Australian parents find themselves asking this question especially if their child seems more active, impulsive, or easily distracted than other children their age.

ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is a common neurodevelopmental condition. In young children, it can show up as constant movement, difficulty sitting still even for short periods, interrupting frequently, trouble following simple instructions, big emotional reactions, or finding it very hard to focus on activities that don’t immediately interest them.

It’s important to remember that lots of young children are energetic and distractible that’s part of normal development. The difference with ADHD is that the behaviours are more intense, happen most of the time, occur in more than one setting (for example, at home and at preschool or school), and start to affect learning, friendships, or family life.

If your child’s teacher or educator has raised concerns, or if you’re feeling worried or overwhelmed by your child’s behaviour, it may be helpful to speak with your GP. In Australia, a psychologist can complete a comprehensive assessment. This usually involves talking with you about your child’s development, gathering information from teachers, and using structured questionnaires such as the Conners 4th Edition. The goal is to understand your child’s strengths and challenges not just to “label” them.

An assessment does not automatically mean medication. Often, it provides clarity and practical strategies to support your child at home and in the classroom. Your GP can also prepare a Mental Health Treatment Plan to help you access Medicare-rebated psychology sessions.

Seeking an assessment is not about putting a label on your child — it’s about understanding them better and giving them the support they need to thrive.
